Biosecurity with Master Chef Sachie Nomura of Sachie's Kitchen

You may not have thought that biosecurity was relevant to you, but it's actually relevant to everyone.

Biosecurity plays a very important role in protecting the food we love to eat. Imagine not being able to have your favourite food or meal because a pest or disease had ruined it or impacted production.

Imagine if your favourite brunch of avocado smash was not on the menu anymore, because a pest like the queensland fruit fly had ruined New Zealand's avocados. Imagine not being able to enjoy kiwfruit with your pavlova because a pest like the spotted lanternfly had ruined our kiwifruit industry. Imagine not being able to have pork sausages on the barbie, because a disease like foot and mouth had impacted our local pork supply.

Biosecurity protects our local produce, which in turn means we can keep eating great local food and New Zealand growers and farmers can produce healthy meat, fruits and vegetables for all of us to enjoy.

Master Chef Sachie Nomura of Sachie's Kitchen knows biosecurity is extremely important to her and the local New Zealand produce she uses in her amazing dishes. Sachie would be devastated if she could not create (and eat) her delicious pork and chive dumplings.

Watch Sachie's video below to learn more about what biosecurity means to her and her way of life.

It takes all of us to protect what we've got. You can play your part too! Be on the look out for any unusual bugs, pests and diseases and find out how you can report them at Biosecurity New Zealand
